What is the CPU DIODE TEMP and CPU TEMP?

I receive there temperature readings from everest:
CPU Diode temp: 39.3(average)
CPU temp 34.4 (average)

What is the difference be the tow terms? Shouldn't they be the same value?

The "CPU Diode" temp will be a reading of the core temperature(truer/more important reading), whereas the "CPU" temp will be a reading of the heatspreaders temp.
