What is the current nvidia equivalent of the GTX 770 for around £140

Hi,

In an older thread I asked about replacing my GTX 770 2GB as it was unexpectedly refunded after a failed RMA for about £140.

I know I could upgrade to a 1060 but personally, this is more than I need and I can't justify the extra spend given I rarely play games on PC nowadays. (Xbox peasant here...)

What would be the closest equivalent to the 770 for around the price of £140. I see the 1050ti is quite close but the 770 appears to top it in most areas if I read the comparisons correctly.

Thanks,

Sam

The 3gb loses only about 5% performance over the 6gb version. (According to Digital Foundries)

So it would still be a much better performing card than the 1050ti, you are looking at about 20-25fps average extra performance at 1080p on the latest titles.

For proof check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGGe3K-Qd2E (6gb version though)

MSI is one of the better though not best brands. Loyalties can seriously screw up the type of replies you can expect to get. Lots of people will ONLY recommend a certain brand. I am of the opinion that most of these brands are pretty good and you are as likely to buy a dud from one of the "best" brands as you are from MSI.

I would absolutely get the 3gb 1060 over the 1050ti. The VRAM will...
You are asking for Nvidia equivalent, I assume you are not considering the offerings from AMD like the rx470?

If you only want Nvidia then the 1050ti or 1060 are your only options. I think the 1050ti should be pretty good for casual occasional gaming at 1080p (very close to gtx770 and sometimes even better).

If you are more serious then get the 1060.

You may want to consider looking at used GTX970's.

EDIT: I just checked, GTX970's are going for about £160 on ebay. It will smoke your 770, but performance will be on par with 1060 with the two cards trading blows here and there. In the long run the 1060 will win as drivers mature and games require more VRAM.

Well you could go for the 1050ti indeed, otherwise you could go for the rx 470 4gb? it's amd but it's a good gpu, better than both the gtx 770 and 1050ti. for around that price.

so the options are:
gtx 1050ti
gtx 1060 3gb
rx 470 4gb ( probably best option)

I've only ever owned two cards, one AMD and one nvidia. I found that Nvidia was much more user friendly and appears to offer lots of extra features as opposed to AMD. Is this still the case or does AMD compare well. It seems many games have features and graphical options that make use of nvidia cards.

I prefer not to buy used as you have no idea whether it may fail or not, and you have no warranty. Good suggestion on a used card though.

AMD and Nvidia both have good features, and the user interface is down to personal preference. I actually prefer the new AMD interface.

For casual gaming I would pick whatever best fits your budget for the desired performance level.

This is best for your budget:

I noticed that that is a mini card as opposed to a full. What are the genuine differences/limitations of having a mini card over a full sized one? I'm certainly not lacking for space in my tower case 😀

Hello again everyone.

The 1050 ti's seem to have low stock levels everywhere and all require a preorder.

I have seen this 1060 for just under £190

What are peoples thoughts on this one. I've not owned MSI before. How does this brand compare with others?

And the question that's been asked more times than ever, will this 3gb card be enough? haha

I would absolutely get the 3gb 1060 over the 1050ti. The VRAM will not be a big issue at 1080p. The extra processing power from the 1060's chip allows it to utilize the 3gb better than the 1050ti can utilize the 4gb.

Thanks for the thorough reply there.

I have two final questions then.

1) What are clear cut signs of receiving a 'dud' from any brand or supplier?

2) Will this work perfectly with my current rig?

Corsair CML16GX3M2A1600C10 Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz
Asus Z97-PRO MoBo
Intel Core i7 4790K
CMASTER HYPER 212 EVO Cooler
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache
Samsung 120GB SSD
Corsair RM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Thanks again

Question 2 has been answered. That is a very nice setup.

For question 1, the card will either 1)not power on, 2)not display anything, or 3)the performance will be terrible with lots of artifacts on screen and totally unplayable frame-rates. If this happens (very unlikely) just RMA the card.

EDIT: I have a GTX1060 3gb Mini on the way as well for my setup. I choose it because the performance difference between the 3gb and 6gb was so small and I also only game on 1080p.

I am positive you will be pleased with your decision later. The gtx1060 fits a lot better into your setup than the gtx1050ti. Enjoy!
