There very close, different model #'s and looks like the Amazon version is a refurbish, BB version is new.

They will both be terrible for any kind of modern gaming. Maybe games from 5+ years ago will run on it well.

If your gaming budget is around 300$ you may want to consider console gaming or if you have a decent PC maybe using that amount to upgrade.

$450ish can buy you a self-built desktop that will blow this out of the water. Like maxed out 1080p 50fps.

There's probably a reason he wants a laptop -- as in, he may need some portability.

Given the choice, always pick new over refurbished. Your RMA options should something be wrong with it are much, much better.

On occasion some people really need the portability. Mostly people want the portability, but find it isn't price effective for what they can pay.

True. Optimally, if you need something for portability's sake but want a desktop's power (cue Tim Allen's voiceover), I'd pick a tablet for class use & a desktop for home/apartment/dorm use. But, if I don't have the cash for both, I'd pick a laptop as the middle ground.

Ah, OK. And yeah, a custom-built desktop for under $300 is going to be extremely hard to do, especially with including an OS.

So, if those are the 2 that fit your budget, go for the Best Buy brand-new model.
