Can someone explain to me what the fascination is with this game (and the preceding GTA games for that matter)? Is there some perverse satisfaction among immature individuals about taking on the role of a thug and low life loser, running over people and killing cops that I don't understand? No, I haven't played the game(s), just watched various videos of it. Am I missing something?

What's the fascination about BF4, COD, WOW, EVE?
They all involve the mindless slaughter of thousands.

Most of the population has some dislike of the Police, if you've ever gotten a traffic ticket you've wanted to murder a few cops.
And you're putting to much thought into the killing on civilians, they're mostly just in the way, so killing them is just a side effect of reaching your goal.

GTAV also has a pretty amazingly good story that is told in an actually entertaining way, something basically no modern action games achieve or attempt. (Wolfenstein: New Order did this pretty good though)

What games do you play?

the videos that you watch are largely people fooling around in the game, the reason that the last two GTAs have gotten such high critical acclaim is the real openness of the open world as well as the storyline.

While admittedly the storyline includes killing people, civilians and police alike, anyone who buys the game should know that beforehand. If you don't like violence, then don't buy the game, and don't bother whining about it.

There's a lot of open-world sandbox physics stuff you can do. You can do stunts with all sorts of vehicles including jets and there's a big world to explore. Rockstar also put a lot of myths/easter eggs in the game that are fun to look for. I have GTA IV and I must admit it wasn't one of my best purchases though.

Yes you are, its called a game. It isnt real, you arent a real thug and those arent real cops. I promise. Now remove the coal from your crack and relax.

You sound like a model citizen however most games involve killing even Super Mario and Zelda lol
It's better that people play these games instead of getting a real weapon and doing something stupid...

Many of the best games originated form Japan and they have very strict Gun laws and low crime rates despite the violent games that they play...

I support President Obama's Initiative to have stricter gun laws to prevent mass shootings however video games are fun and there is nothing wrong with them...

There are even studies that prove playing military simulators like COD can increase intelligence...
