I want to get the fastest cpu for my Toshiba L650 laptop. At present it is running on an intel i5 M480 2.67GHz.
I'll have it apart for some cleaning and replacement of fan. I thought I may as well put the fastest cpu in while I have it apart.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Regards, Chris.

Umm.... sorry @Cryan78 , perhaps quad-core intel's would also fit:

Intel Core i7 Quad-Core:
i7-720QM,
i7-740QM,
i7-820QM,
i7-840QM,
i7-920XM,
i7-940XM.

This comes for G1 / PGA988A socket, which should be exactly what You have (not sure).
4C/8T processor should make some difference, but it comes at the price of 80$ and might not work for some reason.
From what i googled, i7-610E, i7-620M, i7-640M would fit for this socket.
But i'm not sure, if it will work fine with all of them. Might require bios upgrade etc... I really don't know, how would it behave with Your mobo.

Your CPU should fit BGA1288 / PGA988 socket.

Here's the list of CPU's that fit this socket

If it is BGA it's a moot point as that'll be soldered and there is no swapping it. If it is PGA it's possible, but given the relative performances in the second link is it worth it?is 10% noticeable?

That's true, it's not worth it. But he wants the fastest he can get, so here it is ;-)
Used CPU i7-640M (at my place) is about 40$. it's not that much if You don't want to replace the entire laptop and You dismantle parts anyway. Still, I wouldn't do that - waste of money.
