I just built my system and my i7 4790k run 45C idle and 85-88C when stress tested with prime95, is that ok? and if not what do i do?
Thank you for all the replys here is an update:
Prime95 version: 285
im not overclocking
Im running it on stock cooler
to read my temp i use speed fan, i also checked in bios to see if it was around ~45c and it was 43c
I didn't apply the thermal paste, i used what came on the cpu.

Solution
Temperatures are alright. 79C as maximum is simply false, it's designed to work up to 102C, at which it will throttle itself down.

Not to say running it at 95C+ is healthy, but there is no hard peek of 79C.
review intel temp guide. has all the answers. that is wayyy too hot. core temp should never go over 79C on an i7-4790k for more than a second or so from a spike.

also prime95 26.6 should be used for haswell processors. later versions will cause excessive heat. make sure you are running small fft test.

another thing is to make sure you are reading the correct temp which is the core temp.
download a program called core temp to monitor this.

This comment is totally off base. He is using the stock cooler with stock thermal paste on a non overclocked system which is fine. 45C idle on a stock cooler isn't unheard of. There's pretty much no chance he needs to go through a reapplication of thermal paste. A good recommendation would be to replace his stock cooler to lower idle temps and not to use p95 v28.5 which is overheating his processor.
