Hi all,

I’m building an extra server for my firm, using WS2012r2 (might upgrade to WS2016 soon)

Currently looking at 2 options
- One with an Intel Atom/Avoton motherboard that uses DDR3 ECC.
- The other is a serverboard with Intel C236 chipset/ has a LGA 1151 socket, advantages: have more PCI-e lane + socket to spare later in case i want to put more NIC port in there, plus DDR4.

The server will only be mostly for file-sharing, so it wont need much processing power. I’m looking to buy a low power CPU with maximum 25W TDP.

What’s my options for a decent price one? I’m not looking at the top of the line here!

Thanks

Solution
Two 25w CPU options:

1) If you are not planning to use a discrete GPU, then your only option is "Xeon E3-1235L v5". 4 cores, 4 threads, integrated P530 intel graphics.
2) If you are going to use a discrete GPU, then you should choose "Xeon E3-1240L v5". 4 cores, 8 threads.

The latter has more threads and is a bit faster but no integrated graphics.

I need LACP / NIC teaming, i’m planning to build at least 4-6 ports NIC teaming 4-6Gbps

The use are a file-sharing server with heavy inbound!

Thanks for the suggestions. Probably I’ll get the E3-1235L - cheaper ($80 on ebay) with integrated graphic. It’s a file server so no need for extra power to be wasted on dicrete GPU or even the extra 4 theads!

I could not find those 2 on newegg or amazon though, probably have to get them off ebay or aliexpress! Is there any other places I should look at?
