Just got a 4K 120Hz TV, my card will push 120hz at 1080p & 1440p, but only 60hz @4K. TV only has HDMI inputs, and I am just trying to figure out if the 60Hz limitation is due to the cable I'm using, it's new and supposedly HDMI 2.1/8K ready, or if it's a refresh limitation on the HDMI output from my card at 4K 60hz and it just won't push a higher 4K refresh rate?

Solution

Even my 5700xt has the same limitation and its nearly twice as powerful as a 580.

Weirdly some nvidia rtx 2*** cards can be forced to output 4k 120htz via hdmi 2.0b if chroma is set to 4.4.2 but really still not great as that gives desktop text a 'hazy' look.

In reality 4k 120htz displays have only just become a thing in the last 12 months and the 580 is nearly 5 years old now - it's kind of to be expected.
