I thought the 9800xt was supposed to 12pipeline and that was why it was
supposed to be so much better.

No. # of pipes is the same. Core and mem clocks are different.

The 9800, 9800 Pro and 9800XT all have 8 pipelines and 256bit memory. The
differences are in GPU core and memory speeds. The 9800SE only has 4
pipelines. Of late, apparently, Sapphire has been putting out some 128bit
"9800 Pro" cards, but even these have 8 pipelines.

So is the pipeline why the 8500 has a better pipeline than a 9600xt
card
proc speed mem speed pipeline
Radeon 8500 128 ATI R200 DX 8.1 250 500 128-bit 4x2

Radeon 9600 XT ATI RV360 DX 9 500 600 128-bit 4x1

Yes, it has a better pipeline architecture, and in fact the 8500 128Mb is
very slightly slower than the 9600 Pro in a lot of games and benchmarks
because of this. But when DX9 benchmarks or games are involved, the 9600 Pro
pulls ahead. A 9600XT is a LOT faster than an 8500 doing anything, even
though it only has 1 TMU per pipeline.

They ALL use 256 MB wide memory bandwidth. The difference is that each
successive model is clocked faster.

Now that that is cleared up :) we can get back to the facts yes?

9800, 9800pro, 9800xt both (128mb and 256mb versions of each) are all 8 pipe
configs.
