Originally I arrived at 1,000 watts but I really don't know what I'm doing, and I'm unsure about the wattage.

here are the components

MSI 970A-G43 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (one stick)
SAPPHIRE DUAL-X 100370L Radeon R7 265 2GB (said it needed 500 watts)
Blackhawk ATX gaming tower comes with five fans
1 TB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive
Blu ray read/write drive

Also any suggestions would be welcome thanks!

Yes you are right about 500 watts system power for the graphics card.

However, at some time in the future you may want to do some overclocking, and you need to make some allowance for capacitors aging and some moderate hardware additions. Considering this I suggest a 650 watts PSU from Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Antec.
