hello there, I have a RAID 1 System implement in my server, just a simple RAID with two 300 GB Hard Drive.
recently one of the drives has gone bad and I want to change it with a new one, I have to take a look at many tutorial and website and get confused because some of them said i need to shut down the PC first, and some of said I can swap it immediately while the server still running.

so which is safer and reliable to handle this? I never swap the failed drive because its been 6 years long and just failed the other day
  • do I need to turn it off first or not?
  • if I do finish swap it, do I need to copy the data manually or will the system do it automatically?
  • do I need to reconfigure the array of drives from the web service?
  • how long will it takes for the drive to be online again so it can be used in case the other one failed again? I hear some can takes days to months. if I have 300 GB will it take longer than a day?

for the Server, I use System x3650 M4, and the hard drive I use is IBM SAS FRU 90Y8878 300 GB.

I hope you can help me clarify things here, Thanks in advanced

Solution
Server ON or OFF depends on the RAID controller.
Err on the side of caution, and schedule some downtime to replace this drive.

Rebuilding a 300GB RAID 1 should take more than a couple of hours.
It should rebuild automatically.

But you really really need to study the documentation on this.
