Ive been looking at my build and i noticed there was an option for a network card. What is this and do i need it to connect my computer with the modem using a cable?

Solution
Normally motherboard has it's own network card already, The build options usually have choice of adding extra cards for specific build purposes like running server on one card only or building a firewall or.. something else like someone not liking the brand that is on motherboard.

And yes, network card (motherboard one will 99.99% of time work just fine) would be connected to the router/modem to access internet, unless you choose to use wireless card instead. (99.9% of motherboards do not have wireless network cards)

You do not need to buy a network card unless you need Wifi in your computer (and some motherboards have it built in) there are also USB network adaptors if you don't want a card. Your motherboard has a network adaptor built in, and the best way to connect it to the network is to use a cable to that port.
