Lately, I've been getting an icon in my toolbar:

Windows Messenger, not signed in.

What is this? Do I need it at all?

You can read about Windows Messenger in the Help and Support Center.

If you use Outlook Express there is a setting in there to turn it on or OFF.
(Tools, Options, 4th checkbox down)
