What kind of upgrade to go for?

Hello!
I have plans of upgrading my PC in a week or two, and I'm wondering how I should do it. My current build is:

CPU: AMD FX-8350, closed liquid cooling
RAM: 16GB 1600MHz
MB: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
GPU: ASUS GTX 680 DCUII 2GB
PSU: 750W Corsair
Storage: 64GB SSD, 2TB HDD

I am mainly looking for an upgrade that will do well with the Oculus Rift / HTC Re Vive, and maybe even 4K gaming. I've been looking at the GTX 980Ti, and it seems to be a good all around fit for my needs. The only problem is that I have a feeling my FX-8350 might be a bottleneck, or that the 980Ti will barely lift my framerate at all in CPU-heavy games.

So, I'm left with three alternatives, and they are:
1. Buy a 980Ti if the CPU isn't a problem
2. Buy a new CPU as well, which means I will probably need a new motherboard and cooling
3. Sell my rig and buy a new one, which will grant me new warranty, and much less work.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'd do a mixture of 2 & 3. Sell the 8350/motherboard/GPU, get an i7/motherboard/980 ti, keep the RAM (it is two sticks right?), drives, and (depending on the model) the PSU. You can maybe keep the cooling from your current CPU, depending on what you have and choose.

An i7-4790k/980 ti setup would most likely handle VR quite well. That said, if waiting is an option you might want to wait for Skylake & Pascal. The supposed performance increase could be quite large, but it's most likely over-hyped by PR.

My powersupply is a Corsair CX750. I have not overclocked the 8350, but I guess I could. My budget is somewhat big, which is why I might buy a new computer for $2500~$3000, and then get $1000 or so for my current rig.

Thanks for the reply. The RAM is 4x4GB, so not 2 sticks, no. I think my cooling works with some Intel-CPU's, but I'll have to check on that. I don't think I want to play the waiting game for another year, although it does sound like some big upgrades are coming next year.
