What specific motherboard?my motherboard is pcie gen 3and my current nvme m.2 ssd is 256gb and that does NOT suffice for gaming any recommendations?
What specific motherboard?
The only limitation you currently have is the capacity. Yes, a 256GB is small once you start including games on it.
Will this new drive be a replacement or addition?
Maybe just put in a larger SATA III SSD, and leave the OS where it is on the current NVMe.
You'll see little actual difference in gaming.
What is the current make/model SSD?Asus Rog b450-f gaming II
what i was planning to do(but after ur suggestion may or may not do) was swap the os drive making some fast 1tb m.2 nvme pcie drive and keep the old ssd but just move it to the bottom ssd slot
with this information, any suggestions
What is the current make/model SSD?
Leave the OS on that drive, in the slot where it is.
Add another drive to isntall games to.
Another NVMe (Samsung 970 EVO) or a SATA III (Samsung 860 EVO or Crucial MX500).
For a game system, either way will work.
Leave the OS on that. The current ssd i own is a crappy western digital sn250
Leave the OS on that.
Add another drive of whatever type you desire.
Or, relegate that WD to secondary status.
A 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus would work well.
According to the user manual, that has ONE slot for an M.2 drive.

The Crucial P5 is a PCIe 4.0 device.
The Z97 motherboard is 3.0 at best, possibly 2.0.
Replace the existing 256GB with a 1TB. 970 EVO.
Add other SATA III SSD if desired.
