Good Day ALL, I'm a newbie to Tom's Hardware, but, i've read some pretty good discussions over the Net. Well, my scenario, is, I purchased an HP 590-p0054 off EBay 2 weeks ago. Of course I researched its specs on the HP Product Specifications page first. Everything seemed to be in order, according to the sellers description. I saw that it originally came with a128gb NVME ssd (for 1 M2 slot), and another M.2 slot (for WLAN). After unboxing, and connecting the pc up, I noticed the C drive was nearly full. So, I decided to get a larger capacity M.2 NVME to replace it. Of course I got an enclosure so I could clone the disk. Downloaded Macrium Reflect, initialized the new disk in Disk Management and proceeded to clone the drive in the pc. Process completed successfully. Here's the thing, upon removing the preinstalled M.2, I saw that it was a SATA M.2 drive. Needless to say, I installed the disk I cloned and WALLAH, it wouldn't boot!!! it did give me a BLUE Screen telling me......OOPs something went wrong! Alson indicated incompatible hardware. So, there I am wondering why this is happening. I've have had no problems in the past cloning drives and using them in my pcs.......and they were older than this one. I should mention, that although the specs say the 590-p0054 comes with Win 10 installed, the seller must have let it upgrade to Win 11, that's what showed up when I powered it up. Honestly, I'm a BIG fan of Win 10, even my wife likes it ( she's a REAL pc novice). So, I researched reverting back to Win 10. And found I could do it with the HP Cloud Recovery Tool. Enter your serial number, and it tells you if can revert. Well, mine could be reverted. So, I placed the tool on a USB drive(required) and ran it. It worked, I was back to Win 10 (of course when the PC was released). After a day or two of updating, it is at thr current 22H2 version. Enough of that. All I want know, is does this Lincs MB accept M.2 SATA or NVME? Are they interchangeable. Id don't know the technical aspects of these drives and what slots they can or cannot be used in. I read what comes with the machine and try to match what I've read. Is ther anyone with more tech savvy than I, that, can give me some guidance on how rectify this issue I seem to have brought on myself?? OH, sorry for the long scenario. Just for clarity, I'll supply the link to this pc. thanks. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06124759

M.2 is the form factor.
SATA or NVMe is the protocol.

They are not automatically interchangeable.
Some m.2 ports can take either, some one or te other.

Id thwe original drive was SATA, get one of those.

Install, and o a fresh OS install of whichever OS...10 or 11.
For any 'used' system, your first move needs to be a fresh OS install.

So, do you think by an M.2 SATA drive being put in place for the OS, it changed how the MB handles drive input and data transmission? Just "spitballing"???

No.

If I read correctly, the original drive was an M.2 SATA.
Is this correct?

If so, likely that port is only SATA compatible. An NVMe drive won't work, even if it plugs in.
Right, that's the drive that was in the pc when I received it. But, check this link and expand the memory category. What it describes contradicts what I received. I think, anyway. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06124759

What is the specific make/model number of the drive(s) in it?
Well, I have to get that info when I get home. I do know that it has a B & M key and said 128GB SATA, can't remember brand or its model number. I'm it wasn't Samsung, Crucial, any of the popular brand names.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice quick responding pc. My only pet peeve, is researching a product (learned that when became a homeowner), asking others about their experiences with that or similar product. More importantly, reviews from current and previous owners. I expect to get what I aid for. And be able to the tasks I performed with the pc I had before. I think that's not much to ask. Thanks.
