being doing prime95s and aida64s and ive been told if you don't set the voltage manually that it can pull more voltage than needed, thus giving higher temps. my i7 4790 is at stock since i couldnt get it to 4.2ghz because of only being able to tweak the base clock.

whats the best way to find out how much voltage is needed.

So you're trying to overclock a 4790 not a 4790k? If I'm not mistaken the max frequency you can get on a non k is max turbo frequency and you shouldn't have to change the Vcore to do that.

So with overclocking, every chip is different. Your chip may require more voltage or less than others. The pro's at AnandTech had 4.2 with a Vcore of 1.125V. Did you read a Overclocking Guide?

no i meant that my cpu on stock was using 1.2v on auto on prime95, ive put it to manual at 1.025v and ive lost 10-12 degrees on prime95 which is insane.

on auto my cpu was idling at 0.713v so jumping from that to 1.2v was a bit big wasnt it, its stable at 1.025v with a lot better temps.

Do not mess with the voltages on a CPU unless you know what you are doing. Its simply not needed.

how is 1.2v fine on a non k cpu at 4ghz..... people can get an i5 4690k to 4.2ghz at that voltage.

i think theres a big difference between 70c and mid 50s on an r1 ultimate.

the r1 ultimate is supposed to be one of the best air coolers and 70c on prime95 is shocking for such a big cooler.

watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMl7iEzpzsA

thats on an overclocked 4770k and his temps are better than mine with the noctua h-d15 than my temps are with a stock 4790 on auto voltage with the side panel off.

The difference between 70c and 55c is just a number that you see on your monitor, nothing positive will occur from reducing the temps from 70...70 is perfectly fine for a prime 95 run. Like i said in a previous post, in a few days, stability issues may or may not arise from your voltage change.

The matter of the fact is I bought a "better" cooler to decrease my temps, before I had an h55 and it was crap, if I ever want to overclock my next cpu I don't want it getting high temps do I with a cooler that's supposed to be one of the best.
