I'm deciding to up grade my CPU to a intel i7 6700k but in order for me to do that i must upgrade my motherboard and ram.
So i decided to go with the asus Z170-AR but i checked the memory compatibility list and there are soo many to choose from and just dont know which to buy.
I would like a 2x4gb set or a 2x8gb if it doesn't cost any more than AUD$150

Yes, it will work. It will just run at DDR4 2133 speed.

As far as XMP is concerned, the XMP profiles are there to make faster settings easy to use. You just turn on XMP in the BIOS and it will use it.

Currently DDR4 2666 looks like it will be the next officially supported speed from Intel. That will probably be 2 years from now, though (and only using newer CPUs that are released around then).

By the way, good choice on your motherboard! The ASUS Z170-AR is my favorite value overclocking motherboard.
The official maximum speed for it is DDR4 2133, but many motherboards can run faster memory using the XMP profile - or even manual settings. I selected a set from Kingston that uses the XMP profile, so you should just have to plug in the memory and go.

Have fun!
