what memory slots do i install my two 8gb ddr3 2400 ram sticks on the msi z97 gaming 7 ?

I am receiving my msi z97 gaming 7 on Monday . I have two 8gb sticks of ddr3 2400 what memory slots on the msi z97 gaming 7 do I install the memory sticks to enable dual channel ? on my current motherboard I have one memory stick installed in the memory slot closest to the cpu then I have the 2nd stick installed on the third memory slot . do all intel motherboards have the dual channel memory slots in the same place ?

The best information is from your manual. Generally they are the two closest to the CPU.

This assumes that you are adding them to same color slots. Not the two closest unmatched colored slots.

The MSI manual specifies slot two and four for dual channels on that motherboard.

Be careful you look in the manual for YOUR specific motherboard ..... I have 4 Asus builds here right now where they specify the 2nd and 4th slots from the CPU....the most recent build however uses the 1st and 3rd.

Should work in either slots 1-3 or 2-4 from the CPU - which is the actual NORMAL config, the first 2 slots compose Channel A for the DRAM and slots 3-4 are Channel B....MSI does suggest 2-4 as that allows some room for an oversize CPU cooler, if you place them in slots 1-2 which was suggested above, they would be running in single channel which is slower

See 5th post ..... Asus default install changed. But one thing remains true that has always been true. The only rule that always applies is "install them as shown in the MoBo manual." Asus having changed it from 2 & 4 to 1 & 3 makes things a bit more inconvenient for those on air cooling

No, not really, as stated above, they should work in either set of slots (1-3 or 2-4), some 'suggest' 2-4 on the assumption that people will use oversize CPU coolers, there may be some out there, but don't think I've run into a mobo over the last couple years that wouldn't work in either pair of slots, with the exception of maybe two, and that encompasses over 150 mobos (individually)...Think part of it may be saying 2-4 to try and eliminate calls about what DRAM they can use.
