Question What MHz is my RAM running?

Just got a new system that is as follows:

AMD Ryzen 3400g
Asus b450 m-a
Hyperx 8gb 3200mhz ram

From what I read the 3400g benefits from ram in the 3000-3600mhz range so that's what I specified. When I got home I see the motherboard supports:

"4 x DIMM, Max. 64GB, DDR4 3466(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666/2400/2133 MHz Un-buffered Memory"

If I plug in the memory is shows it as 2400mhz in the bios, even though the ram is 3200. If I go into the settings in bios and change it to 3200 then at one spot in the bios is shows 3200, and another spot shows 2400.

To further confuse me, when I go into HWIN app it shows it as ddr4 3200...and 1666mhz.

I'm a complete noob with PC's, and yesterday was literally the first time I've ever even opened BIOS. From the Asus website it says you can overclock your 2400 ram into 3200. But can I get 3200 to run at 3200?

At this point I don't know if I'm running at 1666, 2400, or 3200.

Diagnostic programs usually only show the true memory clock. DDR, double data rate is a technique that transfers data twice per clock cycle, essentially double pumped, so you'd times the memory's frequency by two. In your case, 3200MHz ram would show up as 1600MHz or 2400MHz as 1200MHz in Hwinfo, CPUz or Ryzen Master. Looks like your ram is running at 3200MHz according to Bios, so speeds in Windows/apps should read 1600MHz.

For your ram to reach 3200MHz, DOCP (Asus's version of XMP) in the AI Tweaker in the Bios would have been enabled.

Similar to this random picture except yours should say 3200.

Ideally though, you should be running two sticks in dual channel if you want even more performance. Second stick would go in the 4th slot (B2). Trouble with this is, mixing ram from different batches can be troublesome and is why ram are sold in kits.

I actually wanted two 8gb sticks but the places I tried only had 2400mhz. One place had this single 3200mhz, so I picked it up just to get the system going and planned on ordering another one online of the same model.

Do you feel it would be fine to match this one with another piece of the same model, or do you think I'd be better off selling this and getting two that were manufactured in the same batch?

Yeah, would be best sell or keep as spare and buy a set of two to be on the safe side.
