[SOLVED] what monitor is better for gaming?

I have a gtx 1070.
I am deciding between a 1440p 60hz monitor or a 1080p 144hz monitor.

Which do you guys prefer and why?

The reason I ask is because I doubt I can accomplish 144 hz at 1440p with a 1070.

I guess you are talking about gaming? I have a 27" 1440p 144hz monitor but still use 1080p as my desktop resolution as everything is too small at 1440. Unless you are going for a 30" or bigger I would choose the faster refresh rate. Even at 1080p it will look amazing. Still if you get a Gsync you don't need to hit 144hz. Gsync will match the refresh rate to the fps even at lower framerates. I can't tell when my refresh rate fluctuates from 90fps to 144fps. Your GTX1070 might be OK.

Well 1440p 144hz would be the best all-rounder for the moment.
1070 is ok for 1440p 144hz. Not the best but ok.
If you take such monitor with GSync, GSync will help under fluctuating or lower FPS too.
If the game does not give you enough FPS you can still set the game settings lower or run the game with 1080p 144hz.

27" 1440p 144hz monitor with GSync is quite expensive tho'.
If budget is your issue and you can only to pick between 1440p 60Hz or 1080p 144Hz, You need to make decision depending on the games you play most.
For mostly RPGs, 1440p 60Hz.
For fast paced games e.g. shooting, racing, etc., 1080p 144hz.

Sorry I did forget to mention. You are right, I am talking about gaming. I won't be getting Gsync, as monitors with that feature are out of my budget. Here's another question though; if I get a 1440p 144 Hz monitor, the monitor should have the option for 60 Hz as well, right? So if I change this setting, would the monitor be any worse than another monitor designed as a 60 Hz monitor? I am now considering getting a 1440p 144Hz monitor, since reviews show some games work well with the 1070. For games that don't, I might just change it to 60 Hz and keep game settings at very high.

You get it all wrong!
A monitors refresh rate means also the maximum FPS it can display, aside from other benefits of having higher refresh rate.
A 144hz monitor can display up to 144FPS, while a 60Hz monitor can only display up to 60 FPS.
Setting the game to high or low, etc. is only influencing your game FPS. It ha nothing to do with the refresh rate.
