What motherboard should I use to replace my existing one?

Hi!

I have a Dell Optiplex G620 (Small form-factor) and I want to know if I can use a standard Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX motherboard in it. FYI I will be replacing the CPU too.

Unfortunatly with that tower you have two factors working against you.

First and foremost that model uses a proprietary connector on the motherboard for the special circuit board that combines the usb ports, front audio ports and power button. This is completely incompatible with any traditional motherboard.
Secondly the computer does not even appear to have a removable I/O port panel so you would have to take a dremil or cutting tool to cut out the rectangular hole for the rear ports.


So in a nutshell you will either have to replace it with the OEM motherboard, or go all out and get a new computer case, and dont be surprised if the dell power supply cables are special legnthed and wont fit a standard computer case and thus requiring you to get a new power supply as well.

FYI you will also need new memory because any board from the last 5 years uses ddr3 and that computer is using ddr2.


Sorry to hit you with bad news, but better then spending a bunch of money and then finding out it wont work

How about a Dell Optiplex 740 (mini tower)?

You asked what about the mini tower 740, can you elibarate? Are you meaning can you replace your board with that one or what are you asking?

If you only have $80 then the obvious choice is that you just need to find your your g620 motherboard on ebay.
There is probably other models that will work but searching for the 620 will be a lot easier then seeing if other boards will work. For a different board to work it will require it to have that same proprietary motherboard connector, use the same type of memory, and have not only the same cpu socket but support your current cpu.

What!?!? It was 8PM. Anyways, I was going to replace the motherboard because I was upgrading it to a better CPU.
