I can get to the bios of my ASUS Prime Z270A motherboard. I can see both the SSD and the hdd but can't seem to figure out how to install an OS. I would like to install Win 7 from my disk and then upgrade to windows 10 before 12/31/17 ends.
I have tried the disk that came with the motherboard but it doesn't boot. I guess it is because the setup file has an .exe extension. I was able to partially create a partition table with a gparted usb but then it crashed before I was through. I also tried to install a linux distro from usb but it didn't boot. I looked at this thread http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2920777/install-build.html and checked the bios and I am pretty sure I looked in the right place and it is set to auto with the options being SATA or PCIE mode. I didn't change it. After typing this I looked back and my screen was frozen on that page. I might mention that I had to buy a DVI-D to VGA cable to be able to connect my monitor. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

When I get to the first page of the windows installation, neither my keyboard or mouse works so I am not able to click on next.

I have to break away. I will be back after I try this.

I copied the win 7 installation to a 16 gb usb2 and inserted it and the motherboard disk into the system. I pressed F8 on post and I can see the usb and hit enter but it doesn't boot. I get a white flashing dash on the monitor.
I noticed that the usb is on the boot menu twice. One entry has partition 1 included in the name. When I click it I get the white flashing dash. When I click the entry without the partition in the name, I get a message that says NTLDR is missing. Don't know what that means.

I searched for NTLDR is missing and found that there may be several files that are missing:
NTLDR
NTdetect.com
boot.ini
NTbootdd.sys
Should I try to get these from my windows 7 working pc and copy them to the usb?

I am re-copying the Win 7 DVD to the 16 GB USB2 and quitting for the night.

I have looked, searched, and read quite a bit. I just quit for several hours. Then after reading some more on Tom's Hardware I made some changes in my bios. I tried to install from a usb drive with Windows 7 + some ASUS files from the support dvd. The install started and got partially done until my monitor display changed to a reddish lined background and mouse and keyboard were not working. I shut down and started again. The install got as far as formatting and partitioning the ssd drive (the only drive attached) and started to install files, then there was an error message that the computer had to re-start. It did and came back gave me 'Attempted_to_write_to_readonly_memory" error. When searching for a solution I find from windowswally that there are three possible reasons. 1. A fault in a device driver. 2. Hardware failure 3. Wrong BIOS settings due to an attempt to overclock the computer. I haven't been trying to overclock. I am just trying to get an OS installed. At this point I will take any OS and go from there. Is there a setting in the bios to correct this?
