I am attempting to fix up afreinds computer, up dated it to windows 98 from
95. This is the last command/prompt I get and cannot seem to get past it
'Preparing to start your computer
diagnostic tools successfully loaded to drive F
A:\>'
I have tried many commands that I found on website, nothing seems to be
working, says 'required parameter missing, syntax error or bad command or
file name' depending on what I type. It has been years since I used a
windows 98 system and don't know what to do. Thanks

It sounds as if:
1. You upgraded the PC from Win95 to Win98,
apparently OK.
2. You rebooted with the upgrade floppy in A:
(instead of booting from the hard drive) i.e.
loaded DOS rather than Windows.

Have you installed Windows yet, or are you just beginning the process? Are you
upgrading, or doing a clean install?

The message indicates that you are booting with a boot floppy, and are going to the
A:\ prompt when you start the computer. If you already have Windows installed,
please remove the boot diskette from the floppy drive.

Yes, I installed it, worked fine last weekend (he is only home on the
weekends) got on yesterday to finish up and it would not run. Tried all I
could to fix it, called to places in town and followed ones suggestion of
typing sys.com, that did not work, then was told to get a boot up disk for
it. Got it last night, and now this is where it is at. I tried it without
the floppy, safe mode, and a few other ways and still came to this prompt. I
have a few more things to try when I go over there in a couple hours but just
wanted to make sure I had all the suggestions I could before I go as it is a
half hour drive back to my home to get on the internet and look up anymore.

If you are trying to reinstall Windows, insert your Windows 98 CD,
type "setup" and press "Enter".

Aside from Glen, at the prompt type and press Enter after each line:
c:
dir c:\ /p *note space between \ /

The /p switch will move the screen one page at a time at each Enter press. If
you at any time wish to abort the /p while paging, press ctrl+c to get to the
end and at a the prompt.

Do you get a full directory list of the c: drive? Is Windows in the list?

If Windows is listed try typing at the prompt:
win

and see if it boots to windows.

One thing you can try when you get there, is to locate the autoexec.bat and
config.sys files, in the root of the C: drive, and re-name them, then restart and
see if the problem still exists.

At the A:\ prompt you are seemingly getting no matter what mode you try to start in
(is this true?), type the following, and press Enter after each line:

C:
CD\
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.ba_
ren config.sys config.sy_

Then press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. Be sure there is no diskette in the floppy
drive, and no CD in the CD drive.
