Hey guys, making a big upgrade to my personal computer. Bought a Dell G5 15 for $1400 on Dells website, but it still hasn’t shipped to me or been processed yet so I can still cancel. Best Buy has an ASUS FX705GM for $899, same processor as the Dell, same RAM, etc. should I go with that one instead? Ill post the links below.

Dell G5 15

ASUS TUF FX705GM

That ASUS laptop only comes with a 3GB GTX 1060 while the Dell includes a 6GB model. The 3GB adapters are not nearly as capable. If you are getting this primarily for gaming then you might want to consider that.

Does this NEED to be a laptop, because if it doesn't, you could build a much more capable system for that price.

I need it to be a laptop as I am constantly traveling with it. Basically need it to process my 360° videos in GoPro Fusion Studio.

You'll want the extra 3GB of VRAM for processing video. I'd go with the Dell unless you can find another suitable model with similar specs for less. The 3GB GTX 1060 adapters are stripped down and are barely better than a 1050 TI. That Dell seems pricey though for what you are getting.

That Dell also has a 4k display, which means if you game on it, you're going to be dropping settings significantly. Gaming aside, unless you are shooting 4k video, it's probably pointless to have a resolution that high. Assuming you are shooting normal full HD 1080p video, this unit with a 144hz refresh rate, a 6GB GTX 1060 and an NVME SSD would save you about 500 bucks.

Or, if you have an upwards flexible budget, this jump to a GTX 1070, 512GB SSD and 144hz IPS panel might be worth looking at as well.

Thanks man! I will be processing video in 4k (likely 5.2k then scaling down) doesn’t necessarily mean that I will need to watch it back in 4k on the computer though.

How does this one look? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/alienw...lid-state-drive-black/6228319.p?skuId=6228319

Actually, the specs on that look pretty solid. I would try to find some PROFESSIONAL reviews on that unit though because some of Dell's Alienware laptops are known for thermal issues. Not sure that's one of them, at all, but I'd FIND OUT for sure before pulling the trigger. Otherwise, that too looks like a good possibility and it does have the higher end graphics card so that's a bonus.
