What operating system to use when instailling on an external

Hello,
i hav an hp g62 notebook pc and the connection cable to motherboard broke now i cant boot my sister so i tried to install windows on an external drive and it said not able to install windows 7 on external usb nor IEEE. somthing rather help need part for internal hd connection and info on exactly what software will b able to instal thru usb etc boot n run on my exernal systm on an external
