What Options Do I Have With the Windows 8 Firewall?

In order to protect Windows 8 operating system after it is successfully installed on a computer, Microsoft has integrated Windows Firewall in it. With the help of Windows Firewall, Windows 8 computer can be prevented from communicating with other suspicious computers on the network, or from accepting malicious scripts or other potential harmful viruses from untrusted sources on the Internet.

By default Windows Firewall blocks every incoming traffic, and monitors (but does not block) the outgoing traffic. Because of this diplomatic configuration, it becomes challenging for the computer to communicate (send requests or respond to the incoming requests) with other computers.

After Windows 8 is installed, and administrators install any third-party application that requires communicating with the Internet or other computers in the local area network, the corresponding firewall rule for that application is automatically created in Windows Firewall. According to this firewall rule, the installed application is added in the Windows Firewall exception list, which means that Windows Firewall would allow the selected application to communicate (allow to send and receive packets) with other computers in the local area network or the Internet.
