What overclock settings to use on Asrock Z87 Fatal1ty Killer, i5 4670k?

Hi, I'm just starting out in overclocking and wanted to know what settings should I set for the CPU?

I've set the CPU ratio to all core x42 and the vcore overide voltage to 1.150v, everything else is at auto.

My CPU temp on the F-Stream software bundled in the motherboard idles at 42 and 76 at load while using Prime95 blend test. I'm using a CoolerMaster Hyper T4, is this normal temps (at least for this cooler)?

dont touch the voltages yet until you find the highest ratio that it will let you boot into windows with. after that you should use intel burn test on maximum stress level and see if you can make a full pass though that. if not lower the ratio one more until you can make the pass. use hwmonitor and note your min/max vcore and the max temps your hitting. once you know what the stock cvid auto voltage is you can start moving up the ratio multiplier one at a time and adding voltage in the lowest increments one at a time until you can make ibt max stress passes without bsoding. im betting your going to get to 4.3/4.4ghz and your going to be hitting over 80c though which is going to be your limit. there are a few other things that can help but start with that. once you can make it though ibt, then run prime95 on small fft for 12 hours as a final stability check.

Thanks! Basically I can just adjust the vcore and cpu ratio and not touch anything else? My target is 4.4ghz.

get as high on the ratio you can without touching the voltage then start bumping up both the ratio and voltage one increment at a time until your stable.

Currently im testing to 4.3ghz on 1.190 v. I use BurnTest then tried out aida64 and so far it been stable (85 max temp) for 7 hrs and still going. Previously i tried 4.4ghz but thats already on 1.218 v and the temps are reaching 90 which i read is something to avoid?

Im ok with 4.3 now but theres another thing i wanted to know if it might cause issue: see i'm using the cm T4 cooler vertically pusing out the air back of case and the clip is pushing against the 'armor' thingy with the label z87 killer. Its slightly slanted since its a tight fit. Is that thing merely decoration or should i be worried?

yeah i wouldn't even let it run for long periods above about 82c. in general computing your going to be well under what intel burn test will get you, probably 7-10c lower. your already at your thermal limit above 80c. try to keep 4.3ghz and keep lowering your core one step at a time and test for stability. this will keep the unnecessary heat out.

I was just looking for some basic oc instructions and I am thinking of using yours. Are there any numbers not to go over for the CPU ratio and vcore voltage? My present oc settings are the highest ones pre-installed with the Asrock Z87 Fatality Killer and I still can run at 27c. I know I have tons of room to oc but I definitely do not want to fry my CPU.

heat is whats going to kill a chip. many think 1.30v on the core for the 4670k is their limit, some go to 1.35v, some higher. if you have superior cooling like a water block then i see no reason why 24/7/365 1.40v cannot be ran when temps are in control. electro migration will occur at sustained temps above 80c. for you if you your already hitting 80c then your at your thermal limit. you should be trying to get whatever ratio/multiplier your at with the lowest possible stable vcore to remove heat.

The settings I've changed are the Vcore, CPU ratio, CPU cache volt, and CPU input volts based on what I've been reading on the net. Not sure about the power savings, I'm sure I didn't touch any of those.

Been running the computer around two weeks with these settings:

Vcore voltage: 1.190 (i've set it as adaptive once stable after testing)
CPU ratio: 43 (4.3ghz)
CPU cache volt: 1.150 (I lowered this a bit in hopes of lower temps but didn't seem to; Can't remember if I've done the test with this setting; also set to adaptive)
CPU cache Ratio: Auto
CPU Input Volt: 1.800 (I found that it was being defaulted to 1.900 when I change cpu ratio to manual and I read somewhere that it's usually set to +0.5v to +0.6v of the vcore so I just set it to 1.800 with some headroom)

I've not encountered any crash/freeze so far.

How far have you gotten?

I can't get mine stable at 4.4 when using prime or aida.
Also are you able to get good readings off of your chassi fans because mine are jumping between 1000 and 2000
