What power connectors does the MSI GTX 970 need to run?

I am considering purchasing this GPU:

MSI GTX 970

What power connectors do I need to plug into this thing to get it to run? I keep seeing it has two 6 pin connectors and one 8 pin? Do you need all three of those plugged in or what? Or maybe it has just two 6 pins?

Thanks you!

I do not see the 8 pin. Maybe the gaming edition of this card has the 8 pin you are referencing?

Is the gaming edition really that much better anyways? I don't get what the difference is between the two. The version I linked is in stock and I don't want to wait for the gaming edition to come into stock lol.

The gaming version of this card has a custom PCB, military grade components, better cooling and a higher frequency. You can always overclock to match it's frequency.

Hi, I just bought this card and I am trying to install it. This card is the overclocked edition, so it has two 6 pin connectors and my power supply( Corsair CX 600M) has one 8-pin and one 6-pin connector. The PSU came with a cable that has 8 pins on one end and the other end has two 6+2 connectors. Do I need 2 separate power cables, one hooked into each of the connectors on the video card? Or just the one cable I have with both of the 6+2 connectors connected to the video card, with the +2s left dangling? There are no instructions anywhere.

I second the last post as this is my first build and has come to a halt. What we are wondering is does it take two separate power cables straight from the psu to run this card or can we use the ONE cable that came WITH the psu going up to the card that has TWO 6+2 connectors piggy backed at the end of it.

P.S. to add to the confusion the card came with a 6 to 8 pin conversion cable (short, 3 inches)

I came here looking for an answer to a similar problem, but finding none I figured it out myself. I have the gaming edition so it has an 8 pin port and a 6 pin port. What you need to do is plug the 6 into the 6 to 8 conversion they give you and then plug that into the 8-pin port, then plug the other 6 on that cord into the 6-pin port. I used the 6's from the same cord and it works fine, wouldn't work any other way for me so I think this is how it was intended to be. My PSU is the corsair CX750M so it has the same 8 pin to 2 6+2s cord that you were using. Hope this helps anyone with the same problem

Still confused,,,,,,I have the gaming edition, just unpacked it. It has an 8 pin and next to the 8 pin is a 6 pin. In the box is an adaptor cable that has two ends of the 6 pin variety and the other end is 8 pin. How the heck do I hook this gaming edition to the power supply ?

If your PSU has a 8-pin and a 6-pin you can plug those directly to your GPU. You don't have to use the adapter that comes in the box. If you don't have a 8-pin and a 6-pin on your PSU you'll have to use the adapter.

Thanks, FIXED ! I blew one PS (evga 900) that could not handle these new twin powered wattage demands, now I have a new EVGA 1200 watter and it smirks at the power hungry GTX900 (EVGA). The EVGA 1200 watter has a single VGA cable that has both married to it the 8 and the 6 pin connectors; thus no need to share the demands of the GTX900 twin connector power source (no need to share two separate VGA power supply outputs (to the card). plus, the 1200 EVGA watter PS has enough VGA ports to supply 4 way SLi if the mobo is designed for that much SLI functionalities. BTW, not sure of it is related but with my old pci bus power driven video card the i7980 cpu was running at 25c, now the cpu is running at 55c ! Could the new GTX900 be the cause of the increase in cpu temp ?
