What power supply works with the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC Motherboard?

Hello, I have been trying to build my new computer, and noticed that the motherboard wasn't turning on. I bought a TR2 700W Thermaltake power supply, and it seems to not have two cords extra for power ( the 2 12v power plugs at the top corner) . The motherboard manual says I need these cords, whereas the power supply doesn't have these cords. Any recommendation on what power supply will work? Or how to fix this with the current power supply I have?

Your PSU will work fine. That motherboard has the choice of either a 4 pin or 8 pin ATX12V adapter, and your PSU has a cable with a split head of two 4 pin connectors that can be used in the 8 pin slot or just one of them in the 4 pin slot. I would use both since the 12V wires carry a lower current, but it is really not an issue as the 18ga wire used can carry well over what it will need to do.

You will note that the 4 pin slot is the same as the right side of the 8 pin when viewed with the snap connector up. Most motherboards have one or the other and you just attach your power cable to the single slot sometimes only using half the slot or PSU pins.

The PSU only came with 1 12x2 power cord, 1 4x2 power cord (8 pin) for the ATX_12V_2X4 and then PCI-E cords ( 6 pins + 2 pins to the side, no idea where these PCI-E cords go) and that's it, no extra cords to the ATX_12V

Right, connect the 1 4x2 power cord (8 pin) for the ATX_12V to the 8 pin slot. It is keyed to fit only one way, with the little white board snap connector that secures the cable up towards the near edge of the board.

You do not need to connect the other 4 pin ATX 12V -- and the extra PCIe 12V power connector down in the middle of the board is only used if you fill up the PCIe slots with power hungry video cards.

So, the problem, is a 4-pin didn't come with this power supply. nothing besides the 8 pin and 24pin ( main power) , and other wires for stuff such as hard drives and dvd drives. So what do we do? Go and buy a new one? Cause unless it's a problem with this new motherboard, the computer just starts for a few seconds, then turns off, fan on power supply runs, then turns off, CPU fan moves a small bit, then stopped.

we had everything in the computer yesterday, turned it on , it started, then stopped. we then unplugged everything and started it just with the psu and cpu in there still of course, and the thing still didn't fully start. The psu fanned turns a bit, as well as the cpu fan turning for like a second, then stopping. this happened after plugging in the ATX_12V cable. If it's not that causing it, what is it?

Would we start the board with the on board start button? wasn't sure if that was just for OC

No, you should not need both a 4 pin and 8 pin. There are many possible causes for a build not to boot, and unless the board is defective it is not that you don't have the 4 pin connector also attached.

Does the video card also require PCIe power and do you have those attached?

And as Alexoiu says, do a bench build as a board short could be your problem.

Okay, so I have took everything out, only pluging in the 2 power cords, but the fan starts, then turns off on the power supply, the fan for the CPU tries to start, then turns off. What is the problem with it?

how would I know which one is the defective one?
