what ram for what processor

so how do I know what seed, tpye of ram I should run with a processor.

I have p4 945 overclocked to 3.9 on pc5700 (4gb), but pc4200 wouldnt work?

I want to upgrade to c2d E6850 soon, will my ram work, how do I know what speed is best for the processor.

asus p5nd2-sli for mobo
ram timings 5,5,5,5,21
fsb 920, overclocked 15% on mobo auto settings
not stable at 20%
xt600 256mb
500w power supply

Thanks, I'm grateful to here that my ram will work.
but how can i find out for myself what the minimum ram specs are?

Im trying to learn so as not to ask every time i upgrade
 
If you want to overclock, it would be a good idea to get DDR2 800, PC2-6400.

These calculations are valid for Intel, but not AMD. If you are going with the AM2 socket you need DDR2-800, PC2-6400 minimum.

Whats the difference between the E6600 and the E6850?

Just another way to scam people out of their money for something as useless as a slightly higher FSB?
