The type of memory you need is specified by the motherboard your computer uses. You can game on whatever type of memory your computer uses. Typically, you just need enough of it to run games and not be so concerned with the maximum possible speed of your RAM.

This, however, is not true if you are using an AMD APU (CPU+GPU on one chip).

What's your hardware - mobo and CPU in particular. It will vary from platform to platform. In general on current rigs, 1600/9 2x4GB is basically your entry level, for a lower end rig.

Price to performance wise, might look at the 2800/3000/3200 sets, with the tighter the CL the better

I like the GSkill Trident Z and their Ripjaws V series of sticks, in the above data rates they have from CL 14 thru 16
