What RAM to get ?

Hi, i have recently upgrade alot of my hardware and have been told my RAM is severely reducing my performance.

My PC is used for gaming @ 1920 x 1080 primarily and nothing else intensive.


My specs:
Q6700 2.66GHZ
MSI HD Radeon 4870
MSI P695 Platinum MoBo
550w Corsair VX PSU
Antec 902 Case
Samsung 22" LCD Monitor
Windows Vista 32-bit OS

and finally the RAM is Kingston 2 sticks are 533 mhz DDR2, the other 2 sticks are 667 mhz DDR2 which is very budget RAM i am led to beleive.

£90 Budget for 2-4GB of new RAM, some recommendations would be great because i am useless at judging good quality/value.

Get any 2*2GB DDR2 800 kit from a brand name manufacture like OCZ, Corsair,etc. Also, have you considered overclocking the CPU?

This depends on what motherboard you have, if you have 4 slots for ram then go for 4x2GB of DDR2 800Mhz. Any brand will do, I don't think having branded memory is any difference. RAM is RAM, it's not like PSU's.

You can go onto ebay.co.uk and pick up 2GB of DDR2 800Mhz with a Heatsink for around £15. So £15x4 =£60.

Of course if you only have 2 slots then go for 2x2GB setup making that a total of 4GB, which for todays games is by far more then enough.

My motherboard has 4 slots but can only be 1GB per slot i beleive and maximum of 800 Mhz, so i would need 4 single sticks of decent 800mhz, i just though there was some Brand dominance in RAM also.

@ Overclocking CPU, i don't full know about overclocking and have only got sufficient cooling yesterday because my New case build. But i may look into it since i hear the Q6000's OC fairly well.

Are there any other factors to look out for apart from Size and Mhz ?

They all are the sticks i am looking for and all come with Lifetime Warranty's, can anyone shed some light to why there is there Price difference?

With VISTA 32 bit you will not be able to address more than about 3.2 GB, you should look into going to a 64 bit operating system. You will have to do a clean install to go from 32 bit to 64 bit.

I am aware of that but i don't plan to switch OS just yet, and don't mind getting the 4GB RAM now and upgrading OS later. Have just got computer back after a few weeks and don't want the hassle of fresh operating system install and driver updates etc.

Can anyone tell me the best Choice 800Mhz RAM (4X 1GB sticks) out there for my £90 budget or tell me if any of my finds aboved are decent.

Can I just ask what your motherboard model is, I find it hard to belive that it only supports 1GB per slot. That was back in the SDRam days. Most DDR2 motherboards support 2GB per slot (most...)

Thanks godbrother but i went ahead and ordered Crucial Ballistix tracers 800mhz 2x2gb, my motherboard does support 2gb sticks it was my mistake.

Hi, no problem. Ballistix tracers where not nessesory to be honest, you could have gone for normal Crucial 2GB sticks. Saved you a whole load. It would have cost no more then £40.

How much did you pay anyway?
