I'm looking to do a new build (probably with a 3070/3080 and 5800x in it) and I think the first thing to establish is what resolution of monitor to run. I built my last PC 8 years ago and am on 1080p resolution.

I'll be gaming and doing work on it (office docs and a lot of tabs open in browsers, not production tasks) and I was wondering whether it would be best to look to get 1080p, 2k or 4k monitors? I would want 144hz and probably gsync on it too (not sure how much difference it makes for screen tearing).

Another question is if I went for say a 2k or 4k monitor and then played a game at 1080p, would it make the game image stretched out and less sharp because of upscaling?

Thanks

I play a big mix of games, from some that have really low requirements to more strenuous games and then online multiplayer games like valorant. I would like to play some of the newest games at high settings (like cyberpunk when it's fixed) and others.

id get 1440p its so much nicer, i play older games as well as aoe 2 etc and its fine

I'm looking at getting a 27 inch monitor (I sit about 60cm-1m away from my current monitors).

It looks like the concensus is for 1440p. I suppose my slight concern was either with older games that only supported up to 1080p or with watching streams/videos where the resolution is normally 720p/1080p. Would this kind of content look bad/stretched/less sharp etc on a 1440p monitor?

Are there any benefits to staying with 1080p? Thanks!

Thanks for the help on this. Is it possible to get 1440p 144hz monitors for between £200-£300 each? Would they also come with gsync or is gsync even needed (does it make much of a difference)?

Some suggestions of monitors to get would be great at 27 inch!

I, personally, went from 720p directly to 4K UHD.
The difference is mind blowing!
I’ll never go lower than 4K resolution again!
But for gamers, 1440p (2K) is the sweet spot.
