Hi all,

I am an avid gamer, but still play on a very old screen, which doesn't matter to me. My resolution is 1680 x 1050. so a pretty small screen but as mentioned, i do not care.
I do play the latest games consistently though, and lately I have stutters and crashes in the new games, as well that my GPU, a GTX970 (best card I ever had honestly) is making more noise then ever. So it's time to consider a new card.
I play on a
i7 10700 KF 3.80Ghz
GTX 970
2TB SATA drive (yes, that will be next to replace)
ROG Strix Z490 gaming mobo.
32GB RAM

It seems that the RAM on my GPU is outdated now for some of the new games. So I was thinking to get a RTX 3070 or the highest I can go would be a RTX3070 TI price wise. That would cost me 800€ and if I can prevent that, gladly.
Remember, I only play on this old screen and I don't want to get a new one really. So what card would be best for my needs?
Or should I replace other hardware and setlle for a lower card perhaps? I do want to play every game out there (mainly RPG/Action games)
Any advice is welcome, just don't push the 800€ limit.

get a 2070/3060 or AMD equivalent on ebay or similar depending on your budget - will be x2 better than 970. BTW: If you go over 3.5GB on 970 you will get performance issues with the last 0.5GB - known limitation with the 970

Thanks for the fast reply,
I am a bit dodgy to buy a second hand GPU tbh. Just checked Ebay and the prices are absolutely cool, but I'm not feeling like getting a piece of junk that never works?
I don't know, does anyone here has good experiences with second hand GPU's?

I don't know what screen you've got, but if it's old it's likely to be a TN panel, a modern IPS panel would likely be a dramatic improvement in picture quality giving you a more enjoyable gaming experience. You could always use your existing monitor as a secondary monitor.

As for the GPU I would go with a 3070 or 3060 Ti.

Hello,
I have an extremely old screen actually. Never really payed much attention to that fact. I am still playing on 1680x1050 res which is also the max this monitor can handle actually.
Considering your advice I decided to get an upgrade an bought the

SAMSUNG Odyssey G5 C27G55TQBU 27" Curved Gaming Monitor
Together with a
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GAMING 8G

The card is within budget but I had to squeeze something extra for the monitor, though it is still very cheap imho.
Normally they arrive on monday so a lot of good things to look forward to in the new year :)

If you go the eBay route mainly just read the description and check the seller’s feedback. I just bought an rtx 3080 for 600 from there that’s in my pc with no major issues. I may need to change my DisplayPort cable and run ddu to clean the drivers up since I had an amd card previously. But I got the previous amd card from eBay as well and no issues with that. Plus eBay should have buyer protection so if the card isn’t as described then you can file a claim.
