I am looking into building a gaming pc this summer ( end july )but my current laptop is starting to become faulty etc. I was thinking of building a Pc with i5 4690k , z97 Mobo, 8gb ram and all the other components except for gpu. I was thinking of either buying a gtx 970 or 980 if ill have the money in september or buy the gtx 960 when I first get my pc. Is it worth it??

why not consider a GTX 970 or R9 290X ? They're in between the 980 / 960.

What resolution are you gaming at? If your only gaming at 1080p then i would say the 970 is the best place to be.
