What should i do?

This is my current build, Should i upgrade my current build or just build a whole new pc? i'm not getting the fps that i want when playing games like rust, minecraft or really any simple games, i feel like my pc use to perform way better than it does now. I only get about 20-30 fps playing rust at low settings. The fps drops like crazy when doing anything extra.


CPU: AMD FX-8320
GPU: AMD R9 280
HDD: Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB
RAM: Team Team-Elite-16 2x4GB
MBD: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P

not sure what case i have, it has plenty of room (i feel)

If you were to recommend a build i would like to keep it around $700 (i have all the peripherals)

First try doing a clean reinstall of windows (delete everything) and see if that helps performance after you finish applying updates and installing drivers.
If you felt like your computer used to perform better it probably did.

Also, what PSU do you have? a low-quality aging PSU can cause problems, and a good replacement only costs like $50-60.

Click start/click settings/click update and security/click recovery/click reset this PC.

Is your OS license linked to your motherboard or your MS account? Click Start/type "act"/click Activation/ if it says it's linked then umm it is. This http://www.windowscentral.com/how-link-your-windows-10-product-key-microsoft-account shows you how to link it to your MS account.

is ur cpu/gpu overheating? check the temperatures. ur cpu fan maybe loose, causing the cpu to throttle down. same case in gpu maybe? also is rust recognizing ur R9?

Agreed. Let's take that a step further with MSI Afterburner. I would recommend reseating that cooler and verifying the pump is working. Fans are good but without the water circulatting the water does nothing. The heatsink also needs thermal compound between its base and the CPU surface(aka lid). After that is complete I would start a game. One of your most CPU intensive games. Scratch that. Not sure if you KNOW which one is. I would have troubles as well. Not trying to insult or belittle. I would instead use http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/intelburntest.html . Set it to Maximum Stress. Press start. It will give your CPU a workout. If you are at all unsure about how to reseat that CPU I would take it to a REPUTABLE and well reviewed PC shop. My CPU got 7C hotter

than your CPU when it was at 100% load. Watch those temperatures CAREFULLY while the test is running. Anything over 90 and I would END the test and either correctly reseat the CPU cooler or replace it if reseating doesn't help.

Ok, i will take it to a shop as i do not feel confident that i could reseat it without <<watch the language please>> something up ;p i know a shop that ive used before.On the other hand i would still like to have a faster system than this even at its peak. What should i upgrade?

Your first upgrade should be a 480 8GB or 1060 6GB. Should that not get you to where you want then I suggest a complete overhaul. Should you have the more than $700 I recommend upping the CPU to a 6600K i5 with this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157636&cm_re=Asrock_Z170_motherboard-_-13-157-636-_-Product to replace the suggested board.

Is the stock cooler available? I just don't want you to waste any money. The PC tech runs some tests and charges to say your pump is broke. It is........a service..... Then what? That is one reason I prefer air cooling. Sure, it's bulky but I can see the fans spinning. That lets me know it's working. The pump? A little more than a cursory glance is needed to make sure the pump is working in addition to the fans.

I hope AMD does something to inspire Intel to push the gas a little harder. Intel's not had made a MAJOR advancement since Sandy Bridge. For those who had a system prior and then upgraded to the 25 or 2600K the performance increase was MAJOR. These days it's not such a boost. Ryzen is supposed to be a game changer as will AMD's Vega GPUs(think VRAM too).
