What Should I Record To?

This is really starting to piss me off, I've looked for the answer for ages and have gotten absolutely nothing. I've tried to record to my main hard drive several times that has both the game I'm recording, my OS, and my footage all going to it at once. I can record 60fps but the only problem is that I get about 10 seconds to play and record at 60fps then my game locks up for 5 seconds and continues to rinse and repeat. MY theory is that if I put both the game and my OS on an SSD and separately write the footage to the HDD then the game and OS wouldn't jack up all of my write speed, mostly my game. Would this work, and if it doesn't then how do I get rid of my problem?

It should perform better if you record the game footage to the HDD. Playing and recording on the same drive is not optimal. I don't record gameplay (not a gamer) but do record video and always use a drive that is not the OS drive to store the footage.
