Hey everyone,

I've got a question, my pc is about 2 years old ( specs below) and i'm looking to start upgrading soon.
My question is what would be better, Just upgrade the GPU (to a gtx 1080) or just build an entire new system

I feel like my pc is getting a bit old, some programs start to do weird stuff, windows does some weird stuff now and than.

Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
Gtx 780 TI MSi OC edition
Intel i7 4770k 3,5 ghz
Crucial (balistix) 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHZ ram (XMP overclocked)
MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate motherboard
Coolermaster b700 700 watt powersupply
Crucial SSD 250 GB
3 Terabyte HDD from seagate
1920x1080 60hz display

In my opinion, your pc is still pretty decent overall. The CPU should still be relevant for another couple years and the rest of the specs aren't bad. If it was me, I'd upgrade just the video card, unless you have a pile of cash laying around and just wanting a new pc.

At two years, accumulated chaff may make reloading Windows a good idea; start fresh.
You also have a low-quality PSU, now affected by capacitor aging. There's no need to upgrade your graphics card if things are still running as well as you like, but this PSU should probably be replaced. A quality 650W PSU would be sufficient for your system. My own preference is for PSUs built by Seasonic, Super Flower, or Delta.

Oh almost forgot, if it is running funny, try to reload your operating system and see if that helps. If it does, cool. If not, that could be a symptom of some sort of hardware issue beginning to pop up.

Do a clean install of the OS, maybe change out the PSU - your wattage is fine, you may just want a more reliable/efficient one, and I'd upgrade the GPU.

If you are going to remain at 1080p then the GTX 1080 is way overkill! Realistically, so is the 1070 - but the 1070 is reasonably priced for what you'd have.

I'd also say, if your going through the trouble of upgrading the GPU then look at a different monitor. If your set on 1080p resolution, at least look at a higher refresh rate - getting a 144Mhz monitor will be a world of difference and the new GPU will take advantage of it; though if you grab a 1070 or a 1080 then 1440p is going to be a sweet spot.

It really is going to come down to how much you want to spend - and how to plan for the future. Personally, I think, in general a CPU like the 4770k will last you for a few more years; Buying the right monitor will last you a few years as well; and generally a GPU will be good for two to three years if you are staying at the same resolutions and depending on how often you want the latest and greatest.
