What should my laptop settings be to watch laptop to tv?

Hello,
what should my laptop setting be to watch download videos from laptop to tv? I've connected laptop to tv with vga cable and I have audio sound cable also in. But what is the correct resolution? It's showing 1280x768/60 but it takes ages for the video to start, and it constantly freezees.
