What size are Northbridge fans?

The Northbridge fan on my Gigabyte GA-8IHXP is starting to fail. Every now and then it starts to make a low humming noise. To alleviate the problem for now I blast it with some canned air and it goes away for a while but still returns later. I'm not to sure of the size of the Northbridge fans at all. Any help would be great.

40mm fans usually, allthough ive seen some with oversized 50mm fans (orbs)

Most motherboards really dont need a NB fan though. Most p4 chipsets get away with just having a large passive one. The same is true for many AMD motherboards.
A kt266a or KT333 can live with a heatsink of pretty small dimensions. My 8k3a+ has a plain 40mmx40mmx10mm aluminium sink that works well.
Or you could get a zhalman NB cooler... anything really so you dont have to worry about the crappy little fans anymore

Proabably 40MM. Probably not standard mounting (probably recessed), so you might need to use longer screws to mount a standard 40mm fan.

Are you overclocking? If not, simply remove the fan. The board should run fine without it.

actually on dual mobos with a nb fan, it's been found that the fan causes cpu0 to run hotter(by a few degrees). apparently the hot air gets pushed off the nb right up into the cpu. i would assume this for any socket right above the nb. zalman makes a sweet nb heatsink. i've installed that on my msi k7d-L master. some of those nb fans are gawd awful noisy. anyone looking to do that, if you have pins holding your nb hs on there now, try to save them as the ones zalman supplies are really small and won't work on most boards.

cdrw, floppy drive, cd-rom? what are these strange words you speak of?

Do you have a link for the heatsink? Also what kind of thermal paste do I need? There is paste and then there is epoxy mixture, I'm confused as to which one I need. I know I want Arctic Silver though.

I've noticed that underneath the fan there is a heatsink. So if I just take the fan off I should be fine right?

Well I unplugged the fan from the mobo. The thing was about to die and it was making an awful noise. I guess I'll see how it goes from here. I think the temps will be fine.

Yeah no OC planned for me. I probably take the fan off eventually.

Not very tall. If I had to guess I would say maybe a 1/2 inch or so. I'm thinking of getting the Zalman heatsink that FrozenPC.com sells. But not sure if I really need it.

I took the fan completely off tonight and there are fins on the heatsink. I should be ok without this silly fan. I agree with all of you that these fans are pointless!!

i support about 300 computers. when i got here lots were old and sitting on the floor. the dust was just terrible and over and over ive had to replace the cpu fan on them. all small fans about close to northbridge size, nothing compared to modern day cpu fans. all new computers i make sure go on the desk to cut down on dust which helps a lot. i do that at home as well. specialy when you have carpet and poor air purifying. which just had me wondering if you kept yours on the floor to of gotten some dust in it. but your mobo must be pretty freaken new still right? id think you could have that fall under warrenty still.

I probably could get it replaced under warranty but it would be to much of a hassle. If I'm going to replace I'll just buy another fan. So far I've had no problems with the fan off.

I have my KT 266 OC'd to 152 Mhz and my northbridge fan just died one day. At first I panicked and turned off everything, but then I realized that it had been running for hours on passive cooling. Had it off for months now with no ill effects. NB fans are marketing hype and noisemakers.

...ummm...sorry, I forgot what I was going to say...

What you all are saying about the NB Fan not doing anything is not correct on all motherboards. My computer started freezing up on me a while back after gaming for a while or heavy use.
I assumed it was my Vid Card over heating because I had a very cheap card and the HS fell off of the chip. When I replaced the card and it didnt fix the problem I started to look for other things, turns out my NB fan was frozen up solid (It was a new Mobo then too). I replaced it and all is ok now.

It really depends on your system, the environment, circulation, ambient temp, etc etc. I would recommend going out to get a $1.99 NB Fan. No rush but it might save you from having to rewrite a report later on or something, you never know.

Anything for stability.
