Any reason why you're focused on this upcoming "six-core"? The i7 920 is plenty powerful, and uses the LGA 1366. Based on the new i9, I think Intel will continue using this socket for its higher-end CPUs, so I would suggest you get a mobo with it, even if the so-called six core is probably months or even years away.

well i was thinking about the six core, just in terms of future proofing the build. but on further reading i've found that the i7-860 based on the 1156 socket is cheaper than the the 920 and considerably quicker, not to mention more overclockable and the motherboards are a cheaper too. I was considering the i5-750, but as i'm building a music production computer, hyperthreading is a valuable asset according to computer music magazine.

The Hexacore 'i9' is actually the i7 980x EE.
It will be released for the LGA1366 platform.

I would also recommend the i7 920.
Plenty powerful, fairly affordable and highly overclockable.
If in the future you decide you really need a hexacore CPU, you should be able to drop one in.

I'm investigating this now. Just trying to find a decent motherboard for it.....
