I've bought a nice 24" gaming AOC monitor, but now I need a descent speakers with bass subwoofer

Is it reasonable to spend $100 on something like that? Which one should I get?

I know nothing about speakers and sound systems in general

Solution
A few routes you can go. You could get powered studio monitors designed for studios. They are powered meaning they don't require an amp. The problem is they are a flat response across the frequency range. They are design to reproduce the sound without altering it for mixing audio in studios. So they may sound plain/flat to you. But they are inexpensive and very high quality. Personally I love the sound from them as they are full range, not high pitched and tinny, and not low and boomy, like cheap speaker systems.

Another route would be to get some bookshelf speakers and a small stereo amp. You can get amps that have bluetooth and USB built in for connecting to the computer.

Personally I would look at getting a USB DAC...
Trouble with audio is it’s very personal choice. Personally I have the Bose Companion 5’s and they just blow any other PC 2.1 system away that I have heard but they are way over budget. For me they are well worth the price, I was never happy with cheaper options I tried.

Will rather save money and use headphones, I've stopped buying cheap things, cost you more in the long run.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s will blow your mind if you're coming from cheap computer speakers.

There are plenty of other options but the Klipsch have a strong sub. They usually run about $150 but they go on sale for ~$100 occasionally.

Others to consider:

Edifier R1280T or R1700BT - no sub but great sound.

Mackie CR3s.

Presonus Eris E3.5s

If you can wait on a sale you can get JBL LSR306P MK IIs as low as $150 a pair. They're usually $199 each. They generally do that deal on Prime day and Black Friday. Edifier has sales then too.

Personally I would look at getting a USB DAC. Plug into your USB and you get top notch audio out of the computer. No hissing, etc.... The beauty of this is no matter what motherboard or laptop you ever get, you always have top notch audio. You could buy a cheap $75 motherboard and still get top class audio. It actually pays for itself since you no longer need to buy $400 motherboards just to get better audio.

Once you own the DAC you just connect headphones or speakers. I would start with a good set of headphones for computer. The advantage is of course the superior audio, and secondly you can use a microphone for chat without feedback like you would get when using speakers. Down the line you could save up and get some powered speakers if you absolutely want speakers. Myself I'd get powered studio monitors and connect them to a USB DAC.
