What the difference between intel dual core processor and intel core 2 duo processor

please can someone explain it to me, i asked many times here in this forum but never got the complete answer of it. please elaborate the difference between Intel dual core and Intel core 2 duo processor, if both have the core 2 Micro architecture and also both have 2 cores in it then whats the difference, please explain i want to know!

Need to know where you're getting your information from? I mean technically a modern day I3 is an "intel dual core processor" and so is one of the old Pentium Dual cores from 8 years ago. core2duo is a bit more specific but still spanned a few generations. No real way to answer this question without knowing the processors in question.

Actually i'm asking about the difference between old day pentium dual cores and core 2 duo...

They are just a newer architecture, They perform more instructions per clock cycle (by a wide margin If I remember) The hardware that surrounds a C2D should be much better as well, should all be at least ddr2 capable of 800 MHz, and PCI 2.0 I think existed by the end of the C2D's era so you can actually match them with good GPUS.

Confusing part is they've brought the Pentium dual cores back, only difference between them and Say an I3 is the lack of hyperthreading.

the question was about a dell xps 720 one came with the extreme (fastest for gamers and the other came with just a regular. So now read this
what is the difference between a Intel Core 2 Extreme dual-core processor and a Intel Core 2 \dual-core processor both the same one says extreme on it so I'm guessing quicker clock speed and not sure how much cache might be different. I would like to know too. if you need more information than that then your not the one to answer the question.

Core 2 Extreme is a brand name for the best-performing desktop Core 2 microprocessors. These processors were always faster than other Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad CPUs released at the same time. No only Extreme processors had higher core frequency, they also had unlocked clocked multiplier which allowed their owners to increase their frequency above nominal (overclock them). A few Extreme processors had other features that increased their performance even further: higher bus frequency, twice as many cores, and/or large level 2 cache. Being faster than any other Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad on the market, these CPUs were almost twice more expansive than the most expensive Core 2 Duo / Quad microprocessor. The Core 2 Extreme processors were packaged in 775-land package and worked in the same motherboards as Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad CPUs.
