While unplugged, I intend on clipping an anti-static wristband to the case of my PC and poking around it to see what I can upgrade, but that's a different story. I would like to know the precautions I take before doing so. Right now my computer is on and being used to type, as read here. As far as I know, all you need to do is...
1. Unplug computer
2. Remove side panel
3. Attach anti-static wristband
4. Done

Is it really that simple? I don't know a ton about electricity, but logically the PSU should still be holding some power in it, even after being unplugged. Is there a way to completely drain the power from my computer before opening it? My motherboard does not seem to have any lights on it that indicate if it's being powered or not.

Solution
If your power supply has an off switch in the back, turn it off, push and hold the power button for 10 seconds. This will give ample time for any residual power to dissipate. Then unplug the power cord. If no switch, then unplug everything leaving power cord till last, then hold power button for 10 seconds. Eliminate any sources of static possible, in other words, wear cotton, not wool or nylon, try to be on hardwood, tile or linoleum, not carpet. After all that, you are good to explore. You may want to grab a vac, small paint brush (1/2-1" is good) and some q-tips. Since you made an effort to break into the pc, cleaning it (pay attention to CPU cooler, any fans, video card etc) would be a great idea. Just take your time, be gentle, but...
