I'm replacing my motherboard and CPU with some nicer components and I'm wondering what one would typically do with the old ones - just keep them in storage? Try to sell? Build a server (somehow)?

HTPC, house server box, whole house firewall box, sell it, turn it into wall art...
All depends on the age / generation of the hardware... but if it's from within the last say 3-4 years, you could re-purpose it as a second basic machine, as a NAS, seedbox, server etc.
Selling is always an option if you of course have no use for the hardware. You obviously won't recoup what you paid, but any financial return is always better than zero.
Great ideas, guys! Looks like I may need to keep the stuff around anyway, *just* in case something happens. Afterwards though, I may well donate it all.
