(Before hand, I currently have an AMD Semprom 140. (AM3+ Socket))

I'm looking for an upgrade to my CPU, I've come down to these last two, what do you all think?
•AMD FX-4130
•AMD Phenom II X4 970

what I would like to know is:-
1)Which of the two is best performance wise?
2)Which of the two is best price wise?
3)Will they both be compatible with my MB?

Solution
the fx 4350 does out perform the phenom ii x4s but not the fx 4130 (i'm sorry but it just doesn't), but the phenom can be overclock to around 4.0 ghz. the fx 4350 has significantly less headroom but can still get a higher clock speed.

the 4350 can be had for around 99 pounds on amazon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-FX-4350-4-Core-Processor-4300MHz/dp/B00CLBZAWY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374007149&sr=8-1&keywords=amd+fx-4350

so, you have your info. if you think the extra 17 pounds is worth the bit extra performance the fx 4350 would serve you well. if you would rather save some money and overclock the phenom ii 965 then it will still be a significant upgrade over what you have. Really this one can go either way.

personally I'd have to...

Note: AMD has a newer FX-4350 for around the same price, so im going to compare that to the phenom.

In performance terms, the FX processor beats the phenom by like 15-20%.

In value terms, the FX is cheaper and performs better so the FX is the best value.

And both are compatible with AM3+ sockets, just make sure your mobo bios will support the processor.

Benchmarks:
Phenom
FX-4350

Honestly I think you should go with the Phenom II x4 965 BE rather than the 970, both are very close in performance but in the USA or Canada the 965 is about 50.00 cheaper (at 99.00) and is a hell of a deal for the performance of the processor which would be about on par with the FX 4350. Do not get a *1** (Like the FX 4130, FX 6150 ect...) fx chip, these are bulldozer chips and are far inferior to the piledriver chips which are *3** (Like the FX 4350 or the FX 6300)

I would say get the phenom II x4 970 out of the two you listed, but if you can find a phenom II x4 965 and overclock it by .2 ghz (not hard to do at all) you'd probably save money and get the same performance.

Benchmarks for both phenoms:

II x4 965 BE http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+X4+965&id=370

II x4 970 BE http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+II+X4+970 (from bob's post)

1) for performance have a look at the link below for detailed info
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/836/AMD_FX-Series_FX-4130_vs_AMD_Phenom_II_X4_970_(rev._E0).html

Amd fx is better structured than phenom ii

2)price of fx 4130 is 35$ lower than phenom 970

Fx 4130 -109$

970
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103894

3) both are compatible to an am3+ sckt

Phenom ii is am3 but is compatible with am3+

And fx has an am3+ socket

So both compatible

U have no reason to go with phenom as it is outdated and even outperformed by fx4130 easily

If u can spend more u buy a fx6350 vishera for 139$

The fx-4350 is the better chip of all the phenoms. You shouldn't consider a outdated chip if a cheaper and faster one is out. The fx-6300 and 6350 perform better than the 4350, and i would strongly recommend one if you can spare the 20-30 dollars

The fx-4350 would out perform the 965 (the 4130 not so much), but considering the price of the 965 (and it has more overclocking headroom than the 4350 i believe) it has a high performance vs price. It all comes down to what is available in the OP's area and pricing of course. honestly i'd get a 965 before i'd get a bulldozer chip any day, as well as getting a true quad core rather than a quad core that shares resources.

So I will pose the question to the OP. What is your budget and what area do you live in? If we can find the pricing in your area we can make better recommendations.

Out of the two that you listed, I will repeat my recommendation, the 970 would be better than the 4130.

if you can find the phenom II x4 965 BE then it shouldn't too much over 99.00 US and will be a very good performer for the price.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-HDZ965FBGMBOX-Phenom-II-965/dp/B002SRQ214/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1374006592&sr=1-1&keywords=phenom+ii+x4+965+BE (82 pounds)

what mobo do you have? (exact model number please) we can give you a link to the supported cpu list. At worst it would only require a bios update, but being am3+ (which came out after the phenoms) it should be fine.

the fx 4350 does out perform the phenom ii x4s but not the fx 4130 (i'm sorry but it just doesn't), but the phenom can be overclock to around 4.0 ghz. the fx 4350 has significantly less headroom but can still get a higher clock speed.

personally I'd have to agree with Sn1992, the FX is cheap enough and does out perform the phenom, i'd still be interested in seeing clock for clock benchmarks though, seeing as how the fx doesn't have the headroom to easily go higher than 4.2 from what i could see.

Solution
ok none of these processors are supported by the board at all. it is socket am2+

so you'd have to go with a phenom II x4 955 (expensive if you can find it) or a phenom II x6 1055T or 1090T but with all those options you'd be better off going with a new mobo and either a 965 BE or FX 4350

Look that old mobo will not have am3+ socket so better for u to get a phenom 965 that is a complete value for money looking ur system spec
I wud like to tell u that phenom series 9xx x4 unlocked processors just have a diffrnce in clock speeds 965 can be easily o.c. To 3.5 making 970 which is 45$ more and if u do want that clock just get a 30$ hyper 212 plus

Phenom 965- 82£

Hyper 212 plus -32£

Having this cooler willmleave u with room to clock till 3.8-4ghz

Hope u found this helpfull
