So I bought a Gigabyte GA990fxa-ud3 rev 4.0 and an EVGA 600b psu but i dont know what cables are supposed to be plugged into my mobo, help please!

But in my particular case should i plug the 24 pins?

That will be stated in your manual.

But the specifications for your motherboard list a 24-pin main power connector.

1 x 24-pin ATX main power connector
1 x 8-pin ATX 12V power connector
6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
1 x CPU fan header
2 x system fan headers
1 x power fan header
1 x front panel header
1 x front panel audio header
1 x S/PDIF Out header
1 x USB 3.0/2.0 header
3 x USB 2.0/1.1 headers
1 x IEEE 1394a port
1 x serial port header
1 x Clear CMOS jumper
1 x Trusted Platform Module (TPM) header

Yes, plug in the 20+4 into the 24 pin socket.
Plug in the 4+4 into the 8 pin socket.

All the other wires are power for other devices, like harddrives & optical drives.

You might want to locate the gpu power wires from the EVGA which has two 6+2 power connectors just to become familiar with them now.
You match those to the available socket(s) on your graphics card (GPU) if it has power sockets. In other words if your GPU has a 6 pin power socket you plug in just the 6 pin part. If it has two 8 pin sockets then you plug in both 6+2 cables. Not all GPU's need power from the PSU.
