Hey guys, i'm fairly new at all this gaming pc scene and got my hands on my friend's old desktop that he thought was completely wrecked. Turns out he only burned the Hard drive so the pc wasn't working.. obviously. Now that i changed the hard drive and stuff i'd like to know what i can change on it to make it capable of running today's games. Here are my specs :

processor : Intel Core i7 920 @2.67GHz (8 cores)
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 260 (2GB dedicated)
RAM: 12.0 GB DDRM3
it's a 64 bit OS running W10 Right now.
i do not know what the motherboard is.
thank you to any one who can help me !

Solution
i7-920 is capable by today's standards. It is somewhat comparable to Athlon 860K so it is a good CPU still.

12GB of RAM is well enough for any gaming purposes.

The GPU is the thing you need to upgrade in order to turn the PC into a gaming one. What is your budget? What is the power supply of the PC?

My budget isnt something to worry about right now. The power supply is a FSP750-80APG so i'm guessing it pushes 750W?

And that would help me alot in terms of gaming and video editing? And what do you mean by it is proprietary?

So should i grab the GTX 960 or the R9 380 / 380X ? I know they're pretty comparable unless i grab the 4gb version of the R9 380

Since you already have NVIDIA, stay with it. Get the cheapest GTX 960 4GB (most games will not be able to use the 4GB since 128-bit of 960 but some games actually do + some games set restrictions on graphical settings according to VRAM which is stupid).

This is the cheapest (actually not bad) GTX 960 4GB for $195: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/zotac-video-card-zt9030910m

This is the cheapest good GTx 960 2GB for $180: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp42962kr

This is the cheapest good 380: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150730&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

This is the cheapest good 380X: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvr938xg1gaming4g

Thanks alot man ! I'll check all of this out and post again if something is wrong or whatever, have a good night!
