i just got an budget ips monitor and its alright, but it is too bright. it doesnt have many options to adjust backlight or gamma, only brightness and contrast. i would like to know what type of monitor will allow me to tinker with backlight and other settings so i can make the screen really dim.
i have an older tv that lets me change backlight independently from brightness and i would love a monitor like that.
im not sure if TN displays are easier to dim than ips, should i look for a specific brand or more expensive monitors will have these options?

This isn't specific to panel type nor is it specific to higher end monitors. But brightness is literally the backlight setting. It those settings on the tv were doing different things, it's likely it was adjusting gamma as well.

Beyond the settings on the monitor, your gpu will also have its own settings so you can make it darker.
